Art Projects envision alternatives
Among the Machines, currently at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery in Dunedin, New Zealand, features regional artists who are exploring the intersection of utopia, technology, nature and place. I am fascinated by exhibits that examine notions of utopian thought in relation to long term concerns about the environment. Another example is The Frame of the Future a public space art project by Ruth Anderwald + Leanard Grond, and Anna Kim that follows the development of a new district in Vienna Austria – Seestadt Aspern and its utopian urban design. Being in on the ground floor of this construction affords these artists and writers an opportunity to evaluate and weigh in on how these ideals are actualized and see how it conforms to the latest technological standards for ecological sustainability. Art is an amazing tool to raise awareness about our contemporary condition and provides an opportunity to envision alternative ways of living our lives.
